The name of the gun IS NOT "Browning".

That is the name of the inventor.

The inventor created a lot of guns in his life time, so they all get names as such.

For example, there are two browning machine guns.

the 50 cal. one, and the .30-06 (thirty ought-six) one.

Because soldiers in hte field had no real names for either gun, they were forced to call it by its amunition, because that's the only difference between the two

oh, and I know you can call it the M1a, or M2, or whatever. But I don't think many soldiers back in WW2 recognized the initial letters, so they had to call it after the ammunition type. After all, a 50 cal. bullet is mad big.
